Rotary Foundation News – March 2024

End Polio Now Campaign

There have been no new cases of the Wild Polio Virus in Afghanistan since 4/09/2023 and Pakistan since 24/10/2023. We are really now very close to keeping our promise to the children of the world, so as we keep saying “It is time to finish the job”. And these little guys with a little encouragement from our clubs most certainly got behind the challenge and collectively raised at Conference in excess of $14,500.00. Add to that the Gates Foundation of two for one and they provided a total of $43,500.00 AUD of funding to PolioPlus.

Eradication of poliomyelitis remains Rotary’s number one humanitarian priority. Owing to the latest statistics the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) believes there is good scientific evidence to suggest that last year 2023, may be the year we can go on record of eradicating this dreadful disease. It is vital that every club and every district be able to say that they contributed to the historic achievement of ending polio. However, we must keep up our contributions for ongoing surveillance for the next three years so keep up the good work of the Koalas in your clubs.

Rotary Peace Centres

In 2022 we successfully endorsed three Peace Fellows and they are now studying in overseas universities. In 2023 we were successful with two applicants to study at one of our global peace centres this year and they are preparing to study overseas. Applications for 2025 Peace Fellowships open in May this year. So, again please promote these in your clubs as well.

Promoting peace is so relevant today, over 70 million people are displaced as a result of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations. Half of them are children and of course we are all fully aware of the conflicts happening in our world today. Our commitment to peacebuilding answers new challenges: how we can make the greatest possible impact and how we can achieve our vision of lasting change. We are approaching the concept of peace with greater cohesion and inclusivity, broadening the scope of what we mean by peacebuilding, and finding more ways for people to get involved.

Rotary District 9675 Foundation Support

Our sincere thanks to clubs and indeed Rotarians of D9675 who contributed to our Foundation to date this Rotary year. With Clubs and Rotarians support and large private donations we have already exceeded our budget for giving. Thank you all so very much. By contributing financial support to Foundation programs that benefit local and global communities, Rotarians are enabled to use their skills and expertise to support their humanitarian initiatives by way of the Foundation Grants Program. Funds available for Foundation Grants depend on the contributions to the Annual Fund by Rotary Clubs, Rotary Districts, Rotarians and others… Again, our sincere and heartfelt thanks to you all, the people and communities whose lives you will have changed for the better will thank you
more than you can ever imagine.

Let us build peace within and spread it freely. Let us create belonging and imagine the future of Rotary afresh. Let us work together joyously and Create Hope in the World” Gordon McInally, 2023-24 Rotary International President.
