Francis Rex Langthorne AM. Rex retired from Westpac after 40 years’ service. During that time, he held a variety of positions gaining wide experience in many of aspects of the Bank. His career saw him serve in several NSW country towns, the ACT, Melbourne, Sydney Metro and CBD. At the time of retirement, he held the position of Senior Manager Distribution Compliance in the Investments and Insurance Division of the Bank.
Although he has been involved in many volunteer roles over the years including; Scouts, Apex, JCs, Kiwanis, School P & C, Sports Clubs his major focus for the past 30 years has been Special Olympics the sports program for people with an intellectual disability. He was involved in establishing the national body in Australia being a member of the inaugural board.
Post retirement from Westpac he took on the position of Chief Executive Officer Special Olympics Australia for 2 years. Subsequently he was re-appointed to the Board and held the position of Chair 2003/2009.
In 2009 Rex was appointed Chair of the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Advisory Council resulting in him representing Asia Pacific on the International Board of Special Olympics which is based in Washington DC.
In 2010 Rex was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours for services to people with an intellectual disability through involvement with Special Olympics.
Currently Rex Chairs the Sydney Northern Beaches Club of Special Olympics and also coaches a group of athletes in the sport of golf. Later this year he will be the Technical Director for golf at the National Games to be held in Launceston.
