International Women’s Day with Gemma Sisia of the School of St Jude in Tanzania

Rotary Club of Blacktown City celebrated International Women’s Day on 4 March 2025 with guest speaker Gemma Sisia, the founder of the School of St Jude in Tanzania based on the belief that education should be a right, not a privilege. Gemma came with 2 alumni of the school, Winnie Nemes and John Stanley,

An International Women’s Day saying goes, “Empowered women empower the world.” This statement underscores the incredible impact that empowered women have on society. When individuals, (women or men), are inspired by a clear vision, fuelled by passion, sustained by hope, and guided by determination, they can create positive change in communities and even break the cycle of poverty. Gemma and her team exemplify this statement in their inspiring journey.

In the well attended event, Gemma shared her School of St Jude in Tanzania journey, from its beginnings with just three students to its growth into three campuses with over 1800 students. She shared how her vision was supported by her family, friends, and communities, especially mentioning Rotary Clubs in Australia. She described the continuing positive impact the school has on the community and how it is helping students’ families overcome poverty. Hundreds of students have gone on to pursue higher education, and Gemma shared inspiring stories of alumni—whom she affectionately referred to from a personal anecdote as ‘returning turtles’—who have pursued trades, businesses and professions, have become mentors, teachers themselves, making significant contributions to their communities. Gemma also shared stories of students including that of Winnie’s, her resilience and determination.

John shared his inspirational story as a student and graduate of St Jude and now an entrepreneur, a passionate mentor, empowering young people to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, directly influencing thousands of young people.

The venue for the event was generously provided by Grace’s Place in Doonside, adding to the evening’s inspiration.

It was truly an inspirational evening, and guests lingered, engaging in conversations with Gemma, John, and Winnie. If you wish to learn more about St Jude and be part of their continuing journey in fighting poverty thru education, please visit their website www.schoolofstjude.org.
